The Rivers of the Park City area.

The Provo and Weber Rivers share a common birthplace high in the Uinta Mountains east of the historic mining town of Park City.  The waters for these rivers are gathered from the slopes of peaks as high as 14,000 feet.  As these rivers descend through pine and aspen forests, tributaries feed in and a fertile trout habitat is born.  Both are medium sized rivers, which are easy to walk and wade through the majority of the year.  As the Provo River flows southwesterly to lower elevations it reaches the pastoral Heber valley shadowed by Mt Timpanogos.  Here the river flows from Jordanelle dam as an awesome freestone tail-water full of native brown trout averaging 14 inches with many over 20 inches.  This river has been recognized world wide as one of the best in North America.

Similar geography surrounds the Weber River as it turns to its northwesterly route.  This river is also a freestone tail-water with a healthy population of native browns averaging nearly 14 inches and home to many over the 20 inch mark.  There are also plenty of rainbows in this river that can keep you busy in between the heftier browns.  Both rivers have great bottom structure with cut banks, riffles, runs and pools to accommodate the finny quarry.

The Local Streams at times can offer a nice alternative to the larger more popular rivers by taking you to more remote areas.  Current Creek is one such high mountain stream full of cutthroat, browns and brook trout.  The dry fly action on these smaller streams can at times yield dozens of fish to an experienced angler.  Because of its location on the south slope of the Uinta Mountains, the run-off will often recede earlier in the season.

The Fishing

I believe that there are many things that one can accomplish while fly fishing, one of which is catching a fish.  The scenery and sounds that surround you while on the river are a nice compliment to the probability of catching fish on a fly.  11,000 foot peaks are the backdrop as you and your guide search for the next adversary.  Caddis, mayfly and stonefly hatches are consistent throughout the summer on the Provo River.  When the heavy hatches are on, the older, wiser, BIGGER fish become more susceptible to your presentation.  This can make a good hatch an opportune time to hook that 20 incher that you’ve been dreaming of.  The Weber River’s hallmark is the abundant caddis.  There are also plenty of mayflies but it is a relatively rare time when you can’t fool a good trout with a caddis pattern on this river.  On an average day, an experienced angler can expect to hook several fish and the beginner rarely leaves the river without success.

Accommodations

In conjunction with Resorts West (Resort Lodging of Park City), we offer you accommodations ranging from moderate to deluxe.  Depending on your preference we can set you up in a modest studio or a large private home.  While your on the river, the Resorts West staff will be glad to arrange your dinner plans or book a personal massage for your return from the river.  Their business is lodging and they do an outstanding job of making your stay as comfortable and carefree as possible.

The Guides

The guide staff at Trout Bum Too is the preferred guide service for Fly Lodge International’s local Utah trips.  Whether you are a group of several or just one, we work with Trout Bum Too guides to accommodate your individual or group needs.  All of the Trout Bum guides are personable experienced professionals who are nothing less than experts on the waters of this area.

The Weather and Season

Most of the waters of northern Utah are open to fishing year round, with a few restrictions.  In general, if it is warm enough that the ice forming on the eyelets of your rod is limited, it is still good fishing.  Winter fishing can at times rival the best that summer can offer.  January and February are typically our coldest months but it is possible to dress warmly and still have a great day on the river.  The rivers are generally easily waded except for the months of May and June when run-off peaks.  If you find out where the fish are holding during high water, you may not have to move but a few steps all day.  Near the end of June the waters are receding and daily temperatures average between 75 and 80 degrees.  By this time of year, bug life is in full swing and the trout are enjoying the bounty.  Days are predominantly clear and sunny, suitable for picture perfect days on the river through September.  Once October arrives there is a chill in the air, the trees are in fall colors and the big browns have begun to spawn.  Dress warm and enjoy some of the best fishing of the year.
