Cameron Lodge, Chile

The Rio Grande is the largest and longest river on the island of Tierra del Fuego and it’s reputation as the worlds best sea-trout fishery is rarely disputed. The solitude of this part of the world is profound. Here in southern most Patagonia, you are likely to be far outnumbered by 10+ pound sea-trout, sheep and cattle. The average size for sea-trout taken on this section of the Rio Grande is 10 pounds with many fish being taken in the 20 pound range and every angler will enjoy the prospect of landing a monster of up to 30 pounds! Anglers visiting Cameron lodge for 2001 - 2002 season averaged nearly 8 sea-trout per day. Other local alternatives such as the large resident browns and healthy “chromer” lake run browns enter the river from Lago Blanco shaped like rugby balls. For the “grand slam” you may also land one of the large local rainbows.

The river holds runs of sea-trout beginning as early as November, but the main runs are from February to the end of the season in mid April. It’s shores are generally free of obstacles so back casting is not a problem. Springtime will bring the river width to nearly 30 to meters with it shrinking to 20 to 30 meters in mid summer. It’s an excellent river for flyfishing, sometimes more challenging and rewarding the downstream in Argentina, due to the different techniques used. The water is much clearer and maintains it’s clarity, even in higher flows. Blind fishing and wet fly techniques are used most of the time. The winds are less of a factor here as apposed to downstream in the open pampas. However the double haul cast will be a necessary skill for best success.

Cameron Lodge itself is located on a bluff with views of the Darwin range overlooking the river, only a few minutes drive from some of the more productive pools. The lodge is comfortably appointed with three double bedrooms, private baths, hot & cold running water, showers, electricity, and a nice living/dinning room complete with a cozy fireplace to welcome you after a long day of fishing. The daily menu includes regional Chilean meals very rich in seafood items like crab, mussels, scallops, calamari, clams and of course, the popular beef or lamb asado. Meals are accompanied by cocktails like the typical Chilean “Pisco Sour”, and the justifiably famous Chilean wines are also served with dinner.

Equipment

We recommend an eight weight rod with 10 to 30 feet of sink tip line. However, a full range of lines are needed to properly face changes in the fishing condition. Fast action rods of 9 to 10 feet as well as double hand rods. Reels should have reliable drag systems designed with a palming rim and at least 100 yards of backing capacity. Presentations are made on short leaders with strong tippets. Flies are available to booked guests through a large selection for sale at the lodge. Additional equipment, clothing and packing questions can be addressed during the travel planning process.
